Once your safety or security within you home is undermined your ability to Age in Place is put under threat. Preventing safety and security issues is a crucial factor in ensuring you will be able to remain in your own home as you age.
Safety
For people 70 years and over 60% of the falls requiring hospitalisation occur in the home and a person that falls once is twice as likely to fall again within the same year.
A serious injury could mean a very dramatic change in your health and long term independence and in some cases may mean you can no longer live independently in your own home and are forced to move to alternative accommodation.
Removing tripping hazards and preventing injury around the home is the only way to ensure your home will be a safer place to live and help you avoid those life changing accidents. This audit shows you all those items around your home that could cause a potential injury and also highlights issues relating to safety in an emergency and evacuation.
Security
Typically, each year, between 3% and 4% of households will be burgled, and there are roughly an equal number of unsuccessful attempts. The fact that so many attempted burglaries fail suggest that basic security measures can be effective. This audit deals with all those issues involved in making your home safe and even more importantly making your home feel secure. Older people can often feel more vulnerable, even in their own home and even if your home is physical very secure you don't feel that security you will still be uncomfortable and stressed.
This part of the audit addresses all the physical aspects of securing your home and also the issues that will contribute to making you feel more secure.
